DV8 Physical Theatre (1986-2022)
To Be Straight With You : Vox Pops
In
this scene from To Be Straight With You premiered on the 6th December
2007 at the Haus der Berliner Festspiele in Berlin, the company
dramatise the responses given when people were stopped in the streets in
London and asked about homosexuality.
DV8 director Lloyd
Newson created a piece in response to his views towards the continued
intolerance to homosexuality across the world. After watching a
documentary entitled Gay Muslims, Newson was struck by the fact that out
of 200 interviewees, only one would allow their face to be shown, the
others too scared for their safety, and this has inevitably inspired the
religious angle present in the production. DV8 began its research by
interviewing 85 people living in the UK, some who were both religious
and gay, others who were members of the clergy or human rights
organisations. The result of these interviews is portrayed in the
production, with the words spoken taken directly from the mouths of
those who chose to share their experiences or views.
About the artist:
DV8
Physical Theatre was formed in 1986 by a group of independent dancers
who had become frustrated and disillusioned with the preoccupations and
direction of (most) contemporary dance. DV8’s work is characterised by
the desire to communicate ideas and feelings clearly with a focus on
socio-political issues. DV8 officially ended in April 2022 when Lloyd
Newson announced his retirement via the company web page.
